{"id":5003452,"date":"2015-12-17T01:02:38","date_gmt":"2015-12-17T09:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aadev22.local\/?post_type=aa_glossary&#038;p=5003452"},"modified":"2022-08-30T12:06:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T19:06:08","slug":"team-room","status":"publish","type":"aa_glossary","link":"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/team-room\/","title":{"rendered":"Team Room"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The team (ideally the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/team-room\/\">whole team<\/a>, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/product-owner\/\">product owner<\/a>\u00a0or domain expert) has the use of a dedicated space for the duration of the project, set apart from other groups\u2019 activities.<\/p>\n<p>This space is furnished with the various amenities that the team may need: workstations (adapted for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/pairing\/\">pairing<\/a>\u00a0if the team uses that practice), whiteboards and flipcharts, wall space to display\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/taskboard\/\">task boards<\/a>, project plans or other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/information-radiators\/\">charts<\/a>, and so on.<\/p>\n<h2>Common Pitfalls<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The separation criterion is important, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/open-space\/\">\u201copen space\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is \u201cnot\u201d an adequate instantiation of this practice; some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/woody.rtsnet.ru\/literature\/Becker_Sims-Offices_That_Work-IWS_0002.pdf\">research<\/a> suggests that noise (conversations, mainly) spilling over from unrelated activities has a disruptive effect on the concentration needed for project work, but that overhearing project-related conversations is not only tolerated but enhances teamwork; cubicle-type work environments manage \u201cthe worst of both worlds\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Expected Benefits<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Team rooms are favorable to what Alistair Cockburn calls \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/alistair.cockburn.us\/Osmotic+communication\">osmotic communication<\/a>\u201c: the diffusion of information, toward equilibrium conditions, between those who need it and those who have it; instead of relying on explicit communication mechanisms (telephone, email, IM, or meetings) this diffusion is by \u201cambient\u201d means, for instance overhearing others\u2019 conversations or looking at information radiators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Academic Publications<\/h2>\n<p>There is a sizeable body of research on the \u201cenvironmental\u201d conditions favorable to the performance of teams in general, some of it focusing on software teams in particular.
