{"id":5003297,"date":"2015-12-16T23:42:59","date_gmt":"2015-12-17T07:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aadev22.local\/?post_type=aa_glossary&#038;p=5003297"},"modified":"2023-10-18T12:37:29","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T19:37:29","slug":"user-story-template","status":"publish","type":"aa_glossary","link":"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/user-story-template\/","title":{"rendered":"User Story Template"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A user story template is a common format used to write\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/guide.agilealliance.org\/guide\/stories.html\">user stories<\/a> that help you include key pieces of information about that user story.<\/p>\n<p>One particular template, often referred to as \u201cAs a\u2026 I want to\u2026 So That\u2026\u201d is the most commonly recommended aid (often outgrown once past the novice stage) for teams and product owners starting to work with user stories and product backlog items in general:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a (who\u00a0wants to accomplish something)<\/li>\n<li>I want to (what\u00a0they want to accomplish)<\/li>\n<li>So that (why\u00a0they want to accomplish that thing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a bank customer<\/li>\n<li>I want to withdraw money from an ATM<\/li>\n<li>So that I\u2019m not constrained by opening hours or lines at the teller\u2019s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Also Known As<\/h2>\n<p>Another name is the \u201cConnextra format\u201d, in recognition of its origins (see below).<\/p>\n<h2>Expected Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>This template serves as \u201ctraining wheels\u201d, reminding people in conversation about user stories to pay attention not just to \u201cwhat\u201d the desired software product is to do, but also \u201cfor whom\u201d it does it and in pursuit of \u201cwhat objectives\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Common Pitfalls<\/h2>\n<p>Many novice teams fall into rote application of this or some other user story format. In fact, such formats are intended more as checklists. A more relaxed phrasing is often just as effective at communicating the overall intent of a user story.
