{"id":5003296,"date":"2015-12-16T23:40:45","date_gmt":"2015-12-17T07:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aadev22.local\/?post_type=aa_glossary&#038;p=5003296"},"modified":"2022-08-30T11:24:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T18:24:43","slug":"relative-estimation","status":"publish","type":"aa_glossary","link":"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/glossary\/relative-estimation\/","title":{"rendered":"Relative Estimation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>Relative estimation is one of the several distinct flavors of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/guide.agilealliance.org\/guide\/estimation.html\">estimation<\/a> used in Agile teams, and consists of estimating tasks or user stories, not separately and in absolute units of time, but by comparison or by a grouping of items of equivalent difficulty.<\/p>\n<h2>Also Known As<\/h2>\n<p>Relative estimation is the basis of several closely related variants, such as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/systemagility.com\/2011\/05\/22\/using-silent-grouping-to-size-user-stories\/\">silent grouping<\/a>\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettingagile.com\/2008\/07\/04\/affinity-estimating-a-how-to\/\">affinity estimating<\/a>\u201c. Some teams use non-numerical scales as a way to \u201cforce\u201d relative estimation and the names of the corresponding techniques reflect the scale: \u201ctee-shirt sizing\u201d is common, and more exotic scales such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboriginemundi.com\/index.php\/2011\/05\/agile-techniques-fruit-estimation-poker\/\">fruit<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrumology.net\/2009\/09\/17\/story-pointless\/\">dog<\/a>\u00a0points are also found, possibly more for novelty value than for any real gains in clarity.<\/p>\n<h2>Expected Benefits<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>relative estimation, consistent with estimation in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/guide.agilealliance.org\/guide\/nuts.html\">units other than time<\/a>, avoids some of the pitfalls associated with estimating in general: seeking unwarranted precision, confusing estimates for commitments<\/li>\n<li>there is a persistent claim in the Agile community that research in the psychology of planning shows that people fare better at relative than absolute estimation; in fact, the grounding for this claim is at best, tentative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Origins<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>2001: an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/xp123.com\/articles\/agile-project-management-xp-style\/\">article<\/a>\u00a0by Bill Wake points out two distinct flavors of estimation in use among Agile teams, relative and absolute estimation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Academic Publications<\/h2>\n<p>The following references are cited in Mike Cohn\u2019s \u201cAgile Estimating and Planning\u201d in a discussion of the benefits of relative estimation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In a 2001 article by Miranda, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/publicationslist.org\/data\/gelog\/ref-442\/615.pdf\">Improving Subjective Estimates Using Paired Comparisons<\/a>\u201c, a chart presents data suggesting that the described method of paired comparisons leads to more accurate judgments than \u201cad hoc estimates\u201d, however, the article does not provide a reference to the study from which the data originates.<\/li>\n<li>A 1991 study by Vicinanza et al., \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.117.3125&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\">Software-Effort Estimation: An Exploratory Study of Expert Performance<\/a>\u201c, is cited in support of the claim that experts are more accurate in relative estimation, vs. absolute. In fact, the study showed that a sample of five managers, shown data from past projects one at a time and asked to estimate their cost, were more accurate than estimates derived from the mechanical application of COCOMO.<\/li>\n<li>In a 1998 study by Lederer and Prasad, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=631221\">A Causal Model for Software Cost Estimating Error<\/a>\u201c, also cited on relative vs. absolute estimation, the words \u201crelative\u201d or \u201cabsolute\u201d do not appear at all \u2013 the main finding, also on project-level rather than task-level estimates, is that \u201conly one managerial practice \u2013 the use of the estimate in performance evaluations of software managers and professionals \u2013 presages greater accuracy\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In summary, these studies which have for a few years now given rise to the claim that \u201cresearch shows that people are better at relative than absolute estimation\u201d do not in fact seem to square with that claim.
